Nakita is an educator, mental health professional, and passionate advocate for social justice. As a Lecturer in Counseling and Human Services at John Jay College, she is dedicated to teaching through an anti-oppressive lens, fostering an environment where students can explore the intersections of identity, power, and mental health. Nakita holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Columbia University and is pursuing a Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) at New York University where her research focuses on perinatal mental health, substance use, reproductive justice, and the impact of weathering on Black and Native individuals. Throughout her career, Nakita has worked with diverse populations, emphasizing the importance of a holistic, culturally sensitive approach to mental health. She is passionate about creating spaces for healing that are both inclusive and empowering, particularly for those affected by systemic barriers. Nakita developed her expertise in supporting individuals and families affected by pregnancy loss, IVF, pregnancy after loss, and other reproductive mental health concerns through Postpartum Support International and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s mental health program. Her therapeutic approach integrates a queer Black feminist perspective, storytelling, and an anti-oppression lens to create a safe and empowering space for healing.
